Since discovering that my dominant personality archetype is the Explorer, not has my entire world changed as I’ve learned to embrace and express the traits inherent to this profile, but so much of my previous life now makes sense. I now realise why certain aspects of my life have always felt ‘off kilter’.

Thankfully now, for the first time in my life, I’ve never felt so comfortable and accepting of who I am and I feel librated to make unconventional choices.

One of those choices was the decision to move into a converted grain silo on a working farm on the outskirts of the Stellenbosch wine region.

This is the story of how this came about and what it’s really like, living in a silo…

Life in a Silo & Living a Lie

The irony of us living in a Silo is not lost on me.

The journey of moving into this unconventional home was sparked by the pandemic lockdown in 2020 which began the snowball effect of us moving out of the city, moving to the middle of nowhere in the desert and returning to our apartment in the city.

After a few months of living back in our studio apartment in Cape Town, it became very apparent to us that our chapter of city-living was over.

And so the search for an unconventional home in the country began.

Another interesting change that was sparked by the lockdown was the discovery of my Explorer profile. With that revelation of character traits, motivations and desires, I also realised that I’d been living a lie for most of my adult life.

And that lie was that I am I strong extrovert.

I’ve always admired my husband’s ability to embrace his social awkwardness and quiet ways.

Soon after researching the traits of the Explorer, I realised that for most of my life, I’d been swimming upstream in as much as I’d set an expectation that I should always be outgoing and extroverted.

After living in a the desert for nearly a year nurturing the desires of my Explorer, I discovered that I’m more introverted than I realised.

While I love connecting with friends and family, colleagues and clients, I’m now accepting of the fact that for the majority of my waking hours, I’m quite content with my own company and that of my husband.

So living in a Silo really did represent both the internal and external solitude I’ve come to enjoy.

Two awkward introverts

I heard and read in many places that some of the biggest YouTubers out there are not the loud and charismatic extroverts one expects them to be.

In fact, many of our most favourite YouTubers are as quiet and awkward as we are. And that makes me happy.

It gives me the confidence to embrace our alternative life choices, and to let ourselves have fun with making these videos and sharing our unusual preferences without the need to put on a show or be something we’re not.

The say life begins at 40 and I can attest to that.

Since turning 40, my focus and attention has become far more introspective and less outwardly seeking validation.

This chapter and all the events that have unfolded since the turning of it’s first page has lead to a genuine appreciation of and expression of these aspects of ourselves that fall slightly off-centre from the norm.

So here’s two awkward introverts, documenting and sharing our story to honour the people we’ve become and to inspire others who might feel that internal itch to make some life changes that go against the grain.

Who knows, maybe that grain will lead to you living in a Silo!

3 cheers for introverts!
