Melton Wold to Boschrand | South African Road Trip Part 1

2022 is here and it holds the promise of endless adventures for each one of us.

Adventures of the heart, soul and mind, as well as adventures in creativity, connection and business.

Adventures are what make life worth living and certainly what makes self employment interesting.

Whether we’re actively designing our own adventures, or the adventures are thrust upon us, the fact is, we don’t know what lays in store for us further down the road.

I learned some valuable lessons on our recent road trip around South Africa which I’ll be sharing in a future video. In the meantime, if you’re interested to see more of the South African landscape follow along our journey with this short series of videos documenting our road trip from the Western Cape to the Northern Cape, to The Free State and back.

Life is an adventure

Watch now: Melton Wold to Boschrand. In this video you’ll see…

  • The vast landscapes that make South African road trips so epic
  • Incredible thunderstorms that characterise our African skies and how green the Free State is!
  • The Melton Wold Hotel in the Northern Cape
  • The beautiful Boschrand Lodge in The Free State, conveniently located just off the N1 for a perfect trans-provincial stop-off

Crazy Adventures lead to Creative Expression

Whether it’s a musician’s heartache, or a painters lost muse, it’s been well documented that the twists and turns of life often lead to the most incredible creations.

The latter part of 2021 saw many of us gasping for metaphorical (and sometimes literal) air as the weight of the previous 18 months became simply too heavy to bare.

I felt that too – stifled, suffocating and stuck in our inner city apartment.

December brought with it much needed change, overwhelming disruption and the smack in the pants I personally needed to snap out of a very ‘lost’ place.

Having packed up our city apartment and dropped off our worldly possessions inside a completely unknown space which was soon to become our home, we promptly locked the doors leaving behind all our unopened boxes and headed up the coast to my parent’s place to embark on this crazy road trip.

But not before stopping at a car dealership and swapping our two city cars for a single vehicle that’s more suited to outdoor adventuring – all in the same day! Watch that video here…

Just typing this our makes me a teensy bit anxious and thinking – WHO DOES THAT?

If everything’s changing anyway, we may as well lean into the change and get the whole lot done!

This complete shake up of my dreary daily routine was just what I needed to ‘find myself’ again. That, and spending time with loved ones in an abundance of nature.

I felt my enthusiasm for creating return and decided to document our family vacation for posterity.

It turns out that this adventure has sparked a deep desire to create even more video content in 2022 across 3 different YouTube channels. 2 of which I’m starting from scratch with ZERO SUBSCRIBERS!

But I’m not going to let that stop me! It’s all part of the adventure!

Use your adventures and hobbies to create content

It’s easy to fall into the trap of telling yourself that you don’t have anything interesting to share with your audience, but the truth is you do. What’s ‘normal’ for you is guaranteed to be interesting to someone else somewhere in the world.

For example – on this road trip while say in the back seat of the car, I was watching crochet videos on YouTube to learn how to crochet a shopping bag for my Mom as a Christmas present. I thoroughly enjoyed watching those videos and I know so many people with this incredible talent who, for all intents and purposes, are keeping to themselves.  There are crochet channels on YouTube with millions of subscribers and views! It’s a full blown business model for those crafters who took a chance and simply started somewhere.

You’ll never learn what your audience is interested in until you actually start sharing something – anything!

It’s important to simply start, figure out your groove along the way, and most especially – enjoy creating what you create.

These road trip videos take me days to edit – editing work that no one is paying me for. But I enjoy the process of refining my editing skills and I enjoy the fact that at least my family enjoys watching them. Anything else from there is a bonus.

I’m not expecting to get clients from these videos, but I am telling stories and honing my craft while creating something that’s really special to me. And that enjoyment flows over into the other income generating work I do for and with clients. And who knows where this kind of content creation could lead me?

So use your adventures and hobbies to create content – the ripple effect may be far more significant than you could even imagine.
