The Purple House B&B, Smithfield

We started this leg of the road trip at The Purple House B&B in a tiny town called Smithfield.

This is a completely random town in the middle of nowhere but I was honestly delighted by the warm welcome we received at the Purple House B&B.

Luckily for us, the son of our host was in town from the UK. He happens to be a chef and went out of his way to prepare a delicious vegan meal for us. It was so good, I had to ask him for his recipe.

It was interesting to note that given the remoteness of this small town, access to fresh vegetables is somewhat limited, so we were especially grateful that they made the effort to cook us a vegan meal – the fact that it was one of the best home-cooked vegan meals we’ve had was a delightful surprise.

The Hennie Steyn Bridge

This was a pretty spectacular bridge, well worth the visit. There had been a significant amount of rain before we arrived so the Orange river was in full flow. There were even some cows who were marooned one of the small water-locked islands. My little vegan heart was sad for those cows.

The Gariep Dam Wall

A hat-tip to my dad for his epic drone footage of the Gariep Dam Wall. As mentioned before, there had been a lot of rain in the preceding weeks, which was fortunate for us because it meant that the display at the dam wall was particularly impressive – rainbows and all!

I would not want to be out in that on a motorcycle!

Another fascinating stop on this part of our South African roadtrip was The Owl House. The ‘fossilised’ visions of a creative recluse.

If you haven’t been to this marvel of an eccentric home, then I highly recommend seeing it at least once. The drive out to this small village is worth it, in itself.

Have you been to any of these interesting places in South Africa?

I hope you enjoyed following along on this little adventure and appreciate the exploration of random “off-the-beaten path” places.
